Let me start by saying I LOVE Ben Rector's music. Brand New and The Walk In Between are phenomenal albums. Maybe Magic will grow on me, but right now I'd say "it's fine". I'll Aways Love You is excellent. The other songs however feel rather generic. These songs don't resonate like the ones from his last three albums.

I absolutely love Ben Rector. He is definitely first dance material. Car rides, chilling out, any kind of mood really, he is so wonderful to listen to. Whenever his songs play they just seem to fit whatever moment is taking place in my life. So happy for this new music

Album after album Ben Rector completely blows me away. His songs are upbeat, meaningful, and so much fun. 10/10. Will recommend to literally anyone who listens to me talk incessantly about this album.

(TL;DR at bottom) From the beginning to the end of this record, one thing stuck out to me about Ben Rector’s Magic: consistency. Every song from the loud and fast “Drive” to the soft, calm “Love Like This,” every song on this album holds a certain level of professionalism and listenability. All of Rector’s previous albums have had at least one song that I just found myself avoiding when listening to them, such as Brand New’s “Almost Home” or Into the Morning’s “The Beat.” This was not so with Magic. I couldn’t find a single song that I didn’t like. Without hesitation, I can say that this is Rector’s most well-made record of his career. The piano is beautiful, the ambience is heavy, and the theme is recognizable. Rector continues his mission of writing songs with meaning and stories rather than just songs that sound fun. Rector’s next album will have big shoes to fill whenever it is released, and I couldn’t be more excited for the future of Rector’s music. Rhythm: 9.5/10 (not a huge fan of the first verse of Peace) Catchiness: 9.5/10 (felt like some of the tunes sounded too similar to older Rector songs) Musical quality: 10/10 (excellent instrumental usage throughout Magic) Vocal quality: 9.75/10 (Rector hits a lot more high notes than previous records which I love. He’s found his safe space and that’s good) Words: 10/10 (Another amazing album filled with great stories and messages) Overall: 97.5/100 (The consistency of this album is its strongest point: Rector has found the place he sounds best, and I’m glad that he realized that, too.)
